Mentor Philip Perkis,
The Connection with Student Park Taehee

Park Taehee, CEO of Anmok Publishing, learned photography from Philip Perkis at the Pratt Institute graduate school in New York, USA. Philip Perkis, a photographer recognized worldwide and an artist whose work transcends eras, was a lifelong mentor to CEO Park Taehee.
<The Beginning of <Notes on Photography Lectures>

In 2000, after recovering from heart surgery, Philip Perkis began writing <Notes on Photography Lectures> based on his 50 years of teaching experience. He wanted to teach not only his photographic techniques but also his perspective and philosophy on photography to those who wished to learn.
It was Park Taehee, CEO of Anmok Publishing, who proposed the Korean translation of this book. In fact, CEO Park had diligently taken notes from the very first class. This was because she wanted to share Philip Perkis's teachings with many people. So, this was an opportunity for her. Thanks to this, many photographers in Korea were able to read <Notes on Photography Lectures>.
Available Only in the Korean Edition
Revised Edition Additional Manuscript

The section 'Criticism, Some Thoughts' included in <Notes on Photography Lectures> is an additional manuscript available only in the Korean edition. He developed his own method of criticism to resolve the relationship between subjective views on photography and objective, clear criticism, and the key points are contained in the section 'Criticism, Some Thoughts.'
If you are curious about Philip Perkis's method of criticism, which is explained through five key points—'Abstraction-Description,' 'Economy,' 'Intent,' 'Atmosphere,' and 'Presence'—I highly recommend reading <Notes on Photography Lectures>.
Philip Perkis's Last Work Dialogue,
《NŌTAN》

《NŌTAN》 is a book containing Philip Perkis's final works. It includes conversations with his student, CEO Park Taehee, and 33 black-and-white photographs.《NŌTAN》 signifies the importance of achieving balance, where no element dominates, both in photography and in life.

He considered the work of developing and printing film in his own darkroom to be as important as the process of shooting. Therefore, when he began to lose his eyesight and could no longer work in the darkroom, he announced his retirement from photography. His final photographs, which explore the meaning of 'seeing,' are important works that capture traces of existence where time and space, as well as light and darkness, coexist.

'When is a photograph complete?'
The meaning of 《MEXICO》
After experiencing something close to 'resurrection' following blindness in one eye, two heart surgeries, and a kidney transplant, Philip Perkis decided to print films he had taken 25 years ago.
For three years, he printed two photos a day in the darkroom from films shot in Mexico. The book 《MEXICO》 contains 200 test prints, and among them, 70 final prints that were completed.
He came to see his photographs in a completely different way than he intended 25 years ago. All of this touches on another kind of 'communication' created by 25 years of experiences. Philip Perkis says that 《MEXICO》 is a book that symbolizes his life. He says it is like searching without knowing what you are looking for, and only after finding it do you realize it is what you wanted.
So, when is a photograph complete? 《MEXICO》 is a book that helps you reflect on that question.

Maker Introduction

Anmok is a publisher created to enrich readers' lives by making 'discerning' books, as discernment is a good eye for viewing the world.
In the foreword to Robert Frank's [The Americans], a photo book that is important to me, the author Jack Kerouac praised Robert Frank by saying, 'You really have an eye.' After reading that, I thought that discernment is an essential virtue that makes life valuable, so I chose it as the name of the publishing company.
Reason for Pre-order
Because I thought it would be a great opportunity to widely share the world of photographer Philip Perkis with supporters who have the discernment to recognize good works.
I hope that the life, philosophy, and artistic world of Philip Perkis will reach even more people.
