Can digital art be rendered more realistically than hand-drawn art?

Since childhood, I have been exposed to various art materials such as oil painting, watercolor, drawing, colored pencils, and Korean painting.  

In 2018,   When I started drawing on the iPad, I naturally made efforts to capture the feel of real art materials.

At first, I tried drawing with basic or purchased brushes, but none of them felt just right!

So I began creating my own brushes.

With custom brushes, I was able to somewhat replicate colored pencil and watercolor textures, but oil painting was a real struggle for a long time. 

Eventually, after working on the iPad for five years, I was able to gradually recreate the texture of real oil painting.

The brushes I developed were not just made and left as is; I was able to upgrade them further by incorporating feedback from users through online and offline classes, Naver Smart Store, and by integrating them into my own work. 

This personal struggle to break the limits of digital art material textures led to the birth of my own brushes.

Not in a short time,

Oil painting often becomes exhausting even before you start drawing, due to the need to prepare various materials such as canvas, paint, brushes, varnish, oil, palette, and gesso.

Let me introduce brushes that contain thousands of oil painting materials to ease such burdens.

Oil painting brushes come in a wide variety of shapes and types. 

The texture, usage, and the resulting feel differ significantly depending on the shape of the brush. 

Therefore,   They were created to reproduce the touch and feel by referencing the actual brush shapes.

1. 36 Original Oil Painting Brushes 

We have gathered the shortcomings of the previous version oil painting brushes, which sold about 1,000 units worldwide in 2024, and created brushes that only highlight their strengths.  

While the previous oil painting brushes focused on rough textures, 

this original oil painting brush set uses a wider variety of real canvas photos so that when you make a stroke,

the realistic canvas texture is faithfully reproduced.

Additionally, by giving the brushesa sense of dimension, we have maximized the thick, rich expression of oil painting.

Flat Brush

A brush that paints flatly, used for covering large areas or leaving straight brush strokes.

It is mainly used for the first coat and is designed to blend colors well.

Thick

Canvas texture + rough surface texture + color blending + split brush tip

It is useful for painting rough undercoats.

With a thick flat brush for base colors, both the canvas texture and cracked texture are expressed together.

Rough

Rough hog bristle brush texture + rough color blending + rough brush tip

Canvas 1

Very strong canvas texture + dry feeling + color blending + thin and dry brush strokes + weak three-dimensional effect

Please use this when you want to add a flat and intense canvas texture. 

Canvas 2

Very strong canvas texture + intense color blending + soft brush strokes + subtle three-dimensional effect.

This is a brush that can express a soft yet intense canvas texture, and you can feel a slight three-dimensional effect when you repeat the strokes.

Glazing

Diluted and transparent effect + canvas texture + becomes even more diluted with stronger pen pressure.

This brush applies color in a diluted way by mixing a large amount of turpentine oil, and you can control the degree of dilution with pen pressure.

Round Brush

Although this brush is mainly used for curves or details, on the iPad it is designed for soft expressions. Please use it for painting soft and broad areas.

Soft

Soft nylon brush + useful for underpainting + color blending + round brush tip.

This is the easiest brush for underpainting, and color blending is the most natural.

This is the easiest brush to use for underpainting and base layers in portraits. It blends very smoothly with the base color.

Canvas

Soft touch + small canvas texture + color blending.

Similar to Soft, but with added canvas texture.

Gesso

Soft brush strokes on gesso + canvas texture + round brush tip.

This brush gives both canvas and gesso textures at the same time, allowing you to express softness and texture simultaneously.

Rough

Rough brushstrokes + thick texture + excessive color blending

It is good to use when you need a thicker and rougher texture than a base coat.

Glazing

Thin and transparent expression + canvas texture + becomes even thinner with strong pressure + round brushstrokes

This brush is used to apply diluted colors by mixing a large amount of turpentine oil, and you can control the degree of dilution with pen pressure.

Flat | Feels softer than Glazing.

Filbert Brush

A flat brush with a rounded tip that allows for both thin and thick strokes. The size of the brush touch changes depending on the pressure, making it possible to handle both surface treatment and detailing at the same time.

Canvas

Strong canvas texture + excessive color blending + pointed brush tip

Mainly used for detailing, this brush allows you to adjust the size with pen pressure and blend colors while maintaining texture.

I mainly use this brush for detailing, highlights, and bright areas. It is my favorite and most frequently used brush.

It best expresses a moderate canvas texture and a thick, oily feel.

Canvas 2

Strong canvas texture + thick and rough paint expression

It allows for a thicker and heavier expression than the Canvas brush above, but color blending is less effective.

It creates an even rougher canvas brush texture than Canvas 1 above.

This brush is especially well-suited for drawing hair.

Rough Canvas

Strong canvas texture + rough hog bristle brush texture + thin brushstrokes

With a brush that produces both canvas texture and gesso texture at the same time, you can express softness and texture simultaneously.

Soft Canvas

Strong canvas texture + excessive color blending + soft brush strokes + subtle three-dimensional effect

This is a brush frequently used for both the above Canvas and detailed depiction.

This brush allows you to express even excessive canvas texture while remaining soft, and you can feel a slight three-dimensional effect when you repeat the strokes.

The canvas texture appears strongly but the touch ends softly, so use it when you want a soft depiction.

This brush is especially well-suited for expressing skin in portraits.

Dry

Rough hog bristle brush + dry and rough brush strokes + subtle three-dimensional effect

This brush has the texture of a dry, rough brush, and you can feel a slight three-dimensional effect when you repeat the strokes.

The thickness is irregular, and it is used with rough, dry brush strokes. After touching, a slight shadow appears, making it good for giving a rough touch to bright areas.

Rough

Soft brush strokes + canvas texture + smudged expression + subtle three-dimensional effect

This brush stands out for its softly smudged expression, allowing you to feel the canvas texture and a subtle three-dimensional effect.

Heavy

Rough brush strokes + thick and wet expression + excessive color blending + brush stroke shape

This brush is used when you want to blend colors roughly, and it can also express a thick brush stroke feel.

This brush mixes with the color below in a very thick way, allowing you to create brush strokes in the later stages of your painting.

Among oil brushes, this one blends colors the most excessively.

Canvas Soft canvas Heavy

Gesso

Rough gesso texture + smooth color blending + pointed brush tip

It is good to use when you need to depict with a brush that includes the gesso texture while also creating a soft sense of volume.

Thin Dry

Rough hog bristle brush + dry and rough canvas texture + thin paint

It is expressed thinly and roughly, and is useful when you want to add a rough texture to your painting without making it too thick.

The dry and irregular brushstroke texture is expressed together with the canvas texture,

This is a good brush for expressing hair.

Glazing

Diluted dry effect + rough brushstrokes + canvas texture

This brush, which mixes a large amount of turpentine oil to apply color thinly, can create a very thin but rough feeling.

It is useful for changing colors when used over an impasto brush.

Wet 1

Thick paint expression + wet, rough brush strokes + slight three-dimensional effect.

This is a fan brush with an oily feel, and you can feel a slight three-dimensional effect when you repeat the strokes.

Wet 2

Brush Stroke

A brush for connecting contrasting colors. A smoothly blending blender cannot express the texture of oil painting, so this blender brush enables both the rough texture of oil painting and color blending.

Brush Stroke

Rough linear brush strokes + color blending + rough connection

This brush is used to connect colors with a rough feel and is useful for creating real oil painting textures.

Canvas

Canvas texture + color blending

This brush is used to connect colors with a canvas texture and is expressed somewhat roughly.

Rough

Excessive color blending + rough brush strokes

This brush is used for areas where you want to blend colors excessively, and use it when you want the roughest and thickest expression.

Soft

Soft color blending + gesso texture

You can blend colors most naturally, and since the gesso texture is also expressed, you can connect while preserving the texture.

After using the impasto brush, extending the brushstroke ends with a blending brush can make it look more natural.

Canvas texture + thin lines

This brush gives the feeling of sketching on canvas with paint or dry materials.

Oil Stick

It has characteristics similar to solid oil pastels, which are like solidified oil paints that can be drawn directly on canvas.

Thin

A round brush type oil stick with a rough texture that expresses thinly, and can also depict thin dimensionality.

Thick

It is expressed thicker and more vividly than Thin.

This is the oil stick with the roughest texture, and the shadow of the thickness creates a three-dimensional effect.

Fill

This is an oil stick brush that fills areas with a light, spread-out feeling.

This brush has better color blending and a softer texture than the brushes above. It can even create subtle three-dimensional effects.

Thin Thick Fill You can express both the unique thick residue and three-dimensionality of oil sticks.

2. 25 Types of 3D Oil Painting

Various brushstroke shapes   These are 3D brushes developed to create even more exaggerated and three-dimensional effects than the 36 original oil painting brushes, implemented with a 3D sense of depth.

These brushes express three-dimensionality even without shading, and are made with various touch sensations so they can be used naturally together with the 36 original oil painting brushes.

Super 3D

This is the brush that expresses the thickest and most pronounced three-dimensional effect.

This brush was developed to create a 3D effect that is difficult to achieve in Procreate.

This brush shines even more when using bright colors rather than dark ones.

Be sure to add one more layer before drawing.

I created thick and thin textures by dividing the expression applied thickly with a knife and with a brush.

Since the pen pressure is consistent, it can also be used when writing 3D text.

I made brushes that reproduce the touch of a flat brush, including thick and thin brushes, as well as brushes capable of expressing rough textures.

Thin / Rough can be expressed thickly or thinly depending on the pen pressure. The lighter the pressure, the stronger the rough effect.

Try using Flat rough when you want to express hair with more dimensionality.

This is a 3D brush with a cute feel, featuring a rounded brush tip.

I captured slightly different dimensionality and the touch of the brush tip.

# Round Thick

Using the Super 3D brush for the brightest highlights can create a more three-dimensional effect due to the shadow of the touch.

If the finish of Super 3D looks awkward, you can use the canvas blender of the original oil brush to eliminate the awkwardness.

This brush compensates for the shortcomings of the Super 3D brush.

It can be layered naturally with the original 36 oil brushes and can create dimensionality even without adding extra layers.

This is a special brush that is more translucent than Super 3D, allowing you to create a sense of depth by blending with the colors underneath.

# Flat rough

You can add additional rough brush strokes, and because it has a slightly transparent texture, it blends naturally with the colors below.

This is a brush that allows you to add both dimensional shading and texture at the same time.

Rather than stacking layers, it's better to draw on a layer that already has color applied.

# Round

Because it is a round, rough, and translucent brush, it blends well with the colors underneath and is perfect for drawing natural objects.

2-1 Easy 3D

This is an upgraded version of SUPER 3D and 3D, making it easy to create a sense of depth.

This is a previously unreleased brush that provides a unique three-dimensional effect.

Without stacking layers, you can add a creamy, soft oil painting texture to a finished artwork.

It blends well with existing artwork and is useful for creating short, dimensional brush strokes.

Glitter

This brush allows you to add glitter and rough oil textures, creating a variety of colors and a sense of depth.

You can rub while drawing, but if you build up the touch by tapping, you can achieve even more dimensionality.

Each time you add a touch, various colors appear along the edges, allowing you to express accidental and rough textures.

Highly recommended for those who want to try special and new textures.

This brush can create a kitschy and modern feel, accompanied by a sparkling texture and strong brush strokes.

For eyelash-like details, use the glitter filbert to express just the right amount of sparkle and delicacy.

Impasto is a painting technique where paint is applied thickly to create strong brushstrokes and texture.

In real watercolor, the texture of the paper and the amount of water have more influence on the painting than the shape of the brush.

#Can it be used in other apps or Photoshop?
No. These brushes can only be used in the 'Procreate' app. (Not compatible with Clip Studio)

These brushes are for the iPad Procreate app. Refunds are not available due to mistakes regarding the device used.

#Can I only draw portraits?
You can express not only portraits, but also animals, still lifes, and landscapes.

#How do I download it?
After the funding ends, the file download link via MyDrop will be provided through Tumblbug messages.
If the download does not proceed smoothly, we will provide it additionally via email or other methods.
The reward will be delivered in a compressed file format. Please download it on a Mac environment if possible. Since compressed files cannot be opened on a Windows PC, you must download and extract them using the Files app on your iPad.

Yes, you can. Artworks created using the brush can be used commercially.
