Hello.
We are Yeolhwadang, a publisher that has pursued humanistic art publishing for over fifty years.

Korea is undoubtedly a country with outstanding tiger paintings and stories in the world. Among all things, the most abundant folk theme is surely the 'tiger.' It has been over forty years since 'Korean Tiger' was first published. The reason this book has been loved by so many readers for such a long time is that it contains every image of the tiger that has existed in our history and in the imagination of our people.

Printed exactly as the original 1986 edition,
we present it to Wadiz supporters.

"A tiger always appears in Sansindo (Mountain Spirit Paintings). There are so many tiger paintings, and their forms are so diverse that you cannot leave them out. The scene of an old mountain spirit gently and kindly stroking a tiger under a pine tree—doesn't it look peaceful?"

"It is no exaggeration to say that the magpie and tiger painting represents all tiger paintings. Tigers and magpies appear together in Yonghodo, Sansindo, tiger talismans, woodblock prints, and Buddhist paintings, and this combination seems to have been most popular in the 17th to 19th centuries. The magpie and tiger painting was most frequently depicted in folk paintings, and with its humor, satire, abstract expression, and various colors, it best expresses the spirit of the people in the late Joseon period."

"Jeong Su-dong, a poet of the late Joseon period known for his humorous anecdotes, once traveled to Geumgangsan at someone else's expense on the condition that he would tell old stories, and for dozens of days, he told only tiger stories. Tiger tales are very diverse, including not only real fearsome tigers but also tigers that recognize filial piety, repay kindness, perform miracles, and even dance."

"28th year of King Yeongjo. In January, a tiger entered the rear garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Tiger attacks did not cease inside and outside the capital. The king said to his officials, 'There was also an incident in the Goryeo history where a tiger entered the city, which can be seen as a sign that yin is strong and yang is weak.' Minister of War Hong Gye-hui reported, 'This is truly a strange omen.'

About the Maker

For art with a beautiful soul

Since its founding in 1971, Yeolhwadang has delved into publishing in the fields of art, visual media, and Korean traditional culture, painstakingly crafting valuable books that are difficult to make. From the 'Art Library' series, which established Yeolhwadang as an art-specialized publisher among readers, to the full-fledged art theory series 'Yeolhwadang Art Selection,' as well as series such as 'Korean Culture and Arts Collection,' 'Korean Gut,' and 'Yeolhwadang Photo Library,' we have planned series that systematically broaden the horizons of visual culture. We have also published monographs by artists, architects, and writers such as John Berger, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marcel Proust, Le Corbusier, Kim Joong-up, Kang Woon-gu, Jang Wook-jin, Ko Yu-seop, and Kim Yong-jun. With the hope that each book should 'capture and lead our times,' and the belief that it should be a 'book supporting the future of Korean culture,' we are still busy today preparing refined tables of words and images. It has now been over fifty years since we took our first step. Although our appearance may change in response to the rapidly changing times, Yeolhwadang's mindset will remain unchanged forever.
