Breathing Room - In Digestion and Communication

Why do we paint landscapes?

Caspar David's landscapes were of majestic nature. Perhaps, through the back view of a figure standing tall before that immense nature, we come to see a humanistic sense of the sublime toward nature.

Caspar David Friedrich, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, 1817~1818, oil on canvas, 98x74cm

Constable's landscapes made nature the protagonist. No longer just a background, the realistic depiction of everyday nature proudly became the main subject of the painting. For Constable, nature was the scenery of daily life.

John Constable, The Hay Wain, 1821, Collection of the National Gallery, London

However, for us in this era, nature is no longer the protagonist of everyday scenery. Everyday scenery must now be expressed as a sketch of daily life. The word 'landscape' no longer refers only to nature.

Yet my eyes capture and draw the presence of nature scattered throughout the everyday scenery. Fortunately, I currently live in Yeonhui-dong. It is a place where the skyline is still preserved by relatively low houses, not yet dominated by tall buildings, allowing for a wide view of the sky. It is a place where houses still have gardens and trees are planted.

Place is always important. It seems to take as much time to get used to a transplanted place as it does to move. Unassimilated foreign elements quickly shift into other forms of unfamiliarity. However, the trees in Yeonhui-dong feel somewhat familiar to me. The scenery of houses with yards and trees in every yard reminds me of what I saw growing up. Of course, the trees in Yeonhui-dong's upscale homes are quite different in character from those, and the gardens are more like small flower beds.

I often go for night walks. On those walks, I see trees scattered everywhere. Looking at the trees, I feel as if I can breathe easier. Like oxygen in a space lacking air. For me, who struggles with digestion and communication, this is my nature that exists as a one-sided form of communication. I feel the power that life gives. The dark blue trees against the deep blue sky bring me great comfort. At least, they do for me.

I like looking at trees. The green colors of trees express their depth in various ways, from dark shadows to bright hues. Green contains everything from the color of deep darkness to the brightness of pale yellow. My eyes feel at ease. The blue of a bright day and the blue under the dark night, moonlight, and streetlights are all different. The air changes with the time.

I often enjoy night walks to avoid the sunlight of the day. Trees seen at night seem to have a greater presence. It definitely feels like living beings have a stronger presence at night. I try to capture those moments of relief, both in the middle of the day and in the middle of the night, on the canvas.

I am looking for a collector to own my painting.

Even if you do not own it directly, I would appreciate it if you could keep it in your eyes. ^^

Hello, supporters! This is artist Yoonkyung Lee.

This year, I am presenting a collection of small landscape paintings that I have worked on from time to time on Wadiz. All of the works are under size 20. I tried the #SoloLandscapeProject with small canvases I had. I am showcasing the results today on Wadiz crowdfunding.

There is nothing better than the joy of sharing works that have left the artist's hands with many people. I hope the landscapes containing my emotions will provide good visual and emotional stimulation. Additionally, if you become a collector of my works, it will be a great help for my future projects. Thank you!

The Reason for Choosing Wadiz

It is best to view paintings in person. Directly experiencing the materiality of the medium on the canvas gives a different feeling.

The power of an image is born in the viewer's perspective the moment it leaves the artist's hands. While you cannot directly experience the physicality offline, you can enjoy a wide range of appreciation online.

The artist paints. Art lovers appreciate. That appreciation is the final destination and communication of the artwork. And the artist needs collectors for their works. Only then can they gain the strength to continue creating for a long time. That is why we are starting Wadiz funding.
