There were days when even breathing was painful. However,
At the end of that emptiness, I discovered a fortune to give you.

An artist who draws hope at the end of pain, Son Woo-hyun.
The artist deeply explores their inner self and captures the process of pain and healing in their work.
The rare and incurable disease CRPS Although suffering from this condition, they sublimated the journey of finding hope in life into their art. By using traditional oriental painting materials such as ink on Korean paper, they expressed modern abstraction and emotional depth.
What is CRPS?
The medical term for CRPS isComplex Regional Pain Syndrome..
It is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system characterized by severe chronic pain. The affected area mainly experiences intense pain that feels burning or aching. This pain tends to be triggered even by minor stimuli, and is often accompanied by autonomic nervous system symptoms such as abnormal temperature in the area, excessive sweating, and heightened sensitivity.
In a world full of thorns,Are you suffering in silence?
Just enduring each day in silenceOverwhelming reality
A deep sense that no one seems to understand my heart, Loneliness
Suddenly, the darkness within rushes in Emptiness
Nurturing pain with ink without denying it

The moment I wanted to break my brush, the weapon that saved me
Even in the face of a harsh fate where my body was collapsing, I never let go of my brush. Instead, that pitch-black despairThe ink gently spreading on the hanji' was melted into it. The 'thorns' I raised to avoid being hurt gradually became a white, solid shield that protected me, and finally, 'my gaze' began to move from the depths of my inner abyss toward 'hope.'

This is not just an artwork. It is the mostdesperate and beautiful record of healing that I present to you.
Artist Son Woo-hyun's journey of healing
STEP 1. Acceptance of pain: Thorns
What if the 'thorns' that hurt you were actually protecting you?
This is an early work visualizing the excruciating pain of a rare incurable disease (CRPS). The sharp thorns symbolize the desperate instinct to protect oneself from external threats. The dark ink background represents the pain of the abyss, and the sharp lines express the struggle for survival.

STEP 2. Change of perspective: My gaze
When you decide not to avoid pain, things finally begin to appear
This work was created at the point when I began to accept pain not as an external enemy, but as 'a part of myself.' Subtle changes can be sensed among the intricately intertwined lines, capturing the gaze of a self that does not collapse even in despair. The layers of ink built up on the heavy hanji prove the deepening of my inner depth.

STEP 3. Discovery of hope: Four-leaf clover
The darkness of pain into the ink, the silver of miracles onto the hanji
This is the completed form of the artist's worldview. The countless three leaves (everyday pain) hide the four leaves (miraculous hope), expressed with platinum and silver powder. The deeper the darkness of the ink, the more intensely the silver four-leaf clovers embroidered on top shine. This conveys the message that 'only those who have experienced pain can truly discover the value of happiness.'

STEP 4. The Completion of Resilient Vitality: Tree
Like a tree that stands firm in its place, unshaken by any storm,
This series captures the strong will to survive of a tree that quietly holds its ground even in fierce winds and harsh cold. The artist especially focuses on the honesty of the tree, which never neglects the water and nutrients it receives and uses them as the driving force for growth over decades and centuries. The sturdy roots and rough trunk of the tree in the painting symbolize the great affirmation that the hardships we face in life are merely 'nutrients' that make us stronger.

The Beauty of the East That Digital Cannot Capture

1. The Weakest Paper Is the Strongest Paper, Hanji
The artist chose hanji as the only form that could withstand their own pain, because the process of layering and mounting, which makes it tough and strong, resembles how the artist endures. The ink spreading on top is not simply black. It represents our lives, where light and darkness, despair and hope are intertwined.
2. Depth Conveyed by Ink
The layers of ink deeply absorbed into the canvas add a sense of depth to the space, creating an overwhelming three-dimensionality that printed flat images cannot match.
3. Vitality That Changes with the Light
The harmony of silver powder and platinum materials gives a modern sophistication to the static style of Eastern painting, and the subtle gloss that emerges under lighting instantly transforms the atmosphere of the space.
4. Deep Texture
The irregular brushstrokes and textures created by the artist's hand, not by a machine, form a unique aura that can only be felt in the 'original' of Danjeom.
