June and July 2006~ Revisiting the Seas of the Korean War

June is the Month of Patriots and Veterans.
And we commemorate June 25, the outbreak of the Korean War, as well as July 27, the day of the Armistice Agreement and the United Nations Forces Participation Day.

During this time, we are reminded to think about our country once again.
The war has not ended but remains in a state of armistice, and security is still an issue today.

"The War of a Small Navy" is a military history book that begins with this awareness.

This book does not glorify or exaggerate the North Korean Navy.
On the contrary, it is not a book that mocks or oversimplifies them either.

Based on historical records and documents, it calmly traces how the North Korean Navy was formed and how it operated in the seas during the Korean War.

Knowing the enemy accurately.
That is the starting point of security.

Why the North Korean Navy?

The Korean War is mainly remembered as a land war.
Seoul, the Nakdong River, the Incheon Landing Operation, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, and the hill battles are well known.

However, the seas of the war were also important.
The East Sea and West Sea, ports and bases, landings and mines, small vessels and coastal artillery all played clear roles in the course of the war.

Among them, the North Korean Navy was rarely discussed.
Because it was a small and weak navy, it was often overlooked and sometimes regarded as a mere auxiliary force.

However, being small did not mean it was unimportant.
The North Korean Navy was formed through Soviet occupation and military support, the establishment of military organizations within North Korea, and the preparations for the Korean War.

"The War of the Small Navy" follows the formation of this very "small navy" and its participation in the war.

"The War of the Small Navy" deals with the establishment of the North Korean Navy and its participation in the Korean War.

The main contents are as follows.

• The southward advance of the Soviet Pacific Fleet and the beginnings of the North Korean Navy
• The early organization from the Maritime Security Force to the Naval Training Bureau
• The formation of the North Korean Marine Corps, coastal artillery, and anti-aircraft units
• The preparation process of the torpedo boat squadron and the newly established patrol boat squadron
• Movements at the Wonsan base in June 1950
• Naval operations off the east coast at dawn on June 25
• The Battle of Jumunjin and the losses of the North Korean torpedo boat squadron
• The coastal artillery regiment's advance operation at Jumunjin
• Mine-laying and delaying actions off the coast of Wonsan

This book does not exaggerate the North Korean Navy as a powerful force.
However, it also does not say that there is no need to pay attention because it was small.

Even small forces have roles to play in war.
Accurately understanding those roles is the first step to understanding military history.

"The War of the Small Navy" is a historical book written based on the author's research and review of materials.

I tried not to write in a way that is as difficult as an academic paper.
However, I did not treat the facts lightly.

Unit names, place names, dates, operations, ships, and unit organization were compiled based as much as possible on historical sources and records.
To understand the North Korean Navy, I reviewed Soviet military materials, wartime records, and related research findings together.

The goal of this book is clear.

It is not to praise the North Korean Navy.
Nor is it to exaggerate the North Korean Navy.
This book was written to enhance security, to understand the history of war more accurately, and to read the enemy as they are.
