TEO Death Game Production Team Interview (PD Kwon Dae-hyun, Writer Yeo Chae-min)
Q1. What was the initial idea behind Death Game?
To fit the Netflix daily variety show format with a new episode every week,We wanted to create a light and easy brain survival game. That was our thought. Since the airing period is longer than typical OTT variety shows, we wanted viewers to keep coming back with steady interest without becoming overly immersed.1The goal was to present an interesting game focused on 1v1 deathmatches. That was our aim.
Q2. How were each of the games—Feast of Memories, Love Wins All, Show Me the Coin, and Secret Revelation—created?
The production team personally played numerous board games at Red Button, and together with the writers, we researched various references, discussed what to add or remove, or whether to change the framework, as we developed the games. While the choice of game was important, who played the game was also crucial, so we took the players' tendencies into great consideration. After creating the games, we often had sessions with Korea Board Games and the Mensa Puzzle Committee to run simulations and receive feedback for improvements.
- Feast of Memories: A game created with the match between Lee Sedol and Hong Jin-ho in mind, considering their showdown. We thought about a genre where both players would feel the environment was fair for a match. If we chose abstract strategy, it seemed too advantageous for Sedol, while betting or card games seemed to favor Jin-ho, so we wondered what the intersection might be. That led us to the direction of a 'memory-based strategy game.' That was how the concept was decided.
- Love Wins All:This game was alsocreated with the cast in mind first. We started by considering the participants. What if Hong Jin-ho, Yurisa, and Pengsoo played it? What kind of game would allow viewers to immerse themselves in their play as well? Starting from that question,Although it is a poker-based betting game, we wanted even first-time players to become immersed, so in order to achieve that, we created a new combination using rock-paper-scissors mechanics and love cards, to make a more interesting betting battle, and that was our idea.
- Spoiler alert: In typical card games, the goal is to collect card combinations that fit a given proposition, but what if you could create the proposition yourself? That idea led to the development of this game. On the show, the game was played in a more subjective format to allow for the participants' brilliant propositions, but in the version created in collaboration with Red Button, multiple people can enjoy searching for more objective propositions, so please look forward to it,!
- Show Me the Coin: We set out to create a game where players could compete in both psychological betting and resource allocation strategies, rather than a typical betting game. It is a psychological betting game where everyone has the same resources but distributes them using different strategies. It is.
Q3. What is the most memorable moment from the show?
Usually, when filming variety shows, we tend to avoid situations where things get too quiet professionally. On days when there aren't big laughs or great fun, it can be quite draining. Death Game was a bit different.Throughout the filming, even though the players played the game in silence and there weren't big laughs, the set was filled with incredible immersion and excitement. I think this will remain memorable for a long time.
Also,The moments when characters like Pengsoo, Gaeul, DinDin, and Jiyu—who are rarely seen in survival shows—shined, are also unforgettable. The cast members with no brain game experienceshowedhow they skillfully led the game purely with their abilities, without any politics or alliances, and I think viewers really enjoyed seeing that.
Q4. Why did you choose board games? There could have been other formats.
Just because it was titled 'Brain Survival,' I thought that if we simply gave out difficult problems or quizzes similar to IQ tests, viewers might lose interest.'Oh! I want to try that game too,' 'I think I could do even better if I played.' Each week,I wanted viewers to immerse themselves with these feelings, and I thought board games fit that direction best. That was my thought.
Q5. Please say a word to the supporters.
Under the pressure of having to come up with a new game every week, the writers and producers worked hard, brainstorming and going through trial and error during production We did it. Although there are still many shortcomings,Collaboration with Red Button has refined the games to be even more fun,Enjoyable moments with your loved ones I hope this helps you spend meaningful time together. Thank you.
Red Button Board Game Development Team Interview
Q6. What led Red Button to join this project?
We arepeople who make board gamesand at the same time, survival program enthusiasts(laughs).
We have always kept an eye on TEO's content. At the same time, we always had this challenge in mind.
'If we could translate this tension into a real board game, how could we do it?'
Death games were the perfect theme to find the answer to that challenge.
Turning games that were only seen on TV into tangible board games so that more people can experience them firsthand—I thought that was very meaningful, and it was an honor to work with TEO on this project.
Q7. What was the most difficult part of adapting the games from the show into board games?
There is a dealer in the broadcast, right? Someone who intervenes during the game to coordinate the proceedings.
Butthere is no dealer in board games. So,the biggest challenge was to create a structure that runs on its own without a dealer, while preserving the original rules as much as possible. That was it.
Also,Feast of Memories has components that are not commonly used. We visited factories ourselves to make the pieces as similar as possible to those shown in the broadcast, and if you see the actual product now,you will notice traces of that attention to detail. You will feel it.
Q8. Who would you especially recommend this game to?
If you have ever watched the broadcast and thought,'Why can't they do that?' even once, then you were born for this game. Try it yourself and you'll see. It's much harder than you think.
Each game stimulates a different part of your brain, so after just one round, your mind feels tingly and alive. If you enjoy that kind of stimulation, this game will reallyhit your taste perfectly. It will.
