The background for preparing this project is,

Every year, 300,000 tons of oyster shells are discarded in the seas of Korea. More than half are disposed of or landfilled, resulting in an annual processing cost of 350 billion KRW, and if left as is, they become marine waste.

At NShell Biotech, we found the answer in these discarded shells. Using our patented composite bio-process, we have upcycled shell waste into high-purity calcium carbonate, and with this technology, we created the functional cat litter 'Vongole Sand' for both cats and their owners.

The project we are presenting this time has this story.

Vongole Sand is a new-concept cat litter made from discarded oyster shells. Let us introduce its three key differentiators.

First, it neutralizes odors chemically instead of masking them with fragrance. Cat urine is mildly acidic at pH 5.5. The natural calcium carbonate in Vongole Sand is mildly alkaline at pH 8.5, so when it meets acidic urine, a neutralization reaction occurs, eliminating the very conditions for odor formation. Ammonia is reduced by 98% in just one hour. We also added physical adsorption through its porous structure and antibacterial effects.

Second, we tackled dust and sand scattering. Through a washing process and air shower, we eliminated the fine dust that rises when pouring, and polished the particle edges to prevent them from getting stuck in claws. You'll find less litter on your sofa. With bentonite blending, it clumps firmly in just 3 seconds, reducing wasted litter by 15–25%.

Third, it's safe even if groomed, and safe for the planet. With a 60°C low-temperature, acid-free process, sodium is kept below 0.5%, and no mold toxins or salmonella were detected (certified test completed). It's safe even if your cat licks its paws. Plus, upcycling shell waste reduces 450 kg CO2eq of carbon per ton. One bag of litter makes the ocean a little better.
